MICAS is part of a broader renewal of the Floriana fortress area in Valletta, designed to establish a new cultural hub with a year-round appeal for artists and visitors. The core challenge was overcoming the inherent conflict between the monument—the “inviolable” bastion—and the contemporary functions required for a modern exhibition space.
The project proposes a large-scale roof structure: an infrastructure that unifies the scattered elements of the site, becoming a distinctive hallmark for the new MICAS space. Suspended over the bastion, this vast structure serves as a luminous, iconic gesture for Floriana’s cultural identity, sheltering a metamorphic space that is as fluid and dynamic as the contemporary art it hosts. The space is conceived for maximum flexibility, adapting to exhibitions, artistic performances, or events.
